Every week, volunteers from Project Suds America, Inc. meet with homeless veterans from our area at the Flamingo Laundry in Melbourne . The veterans receive a hot breakfast before doing their laundry and visiting with community
volunteers. Coins and detergent are given to each veteran so they can have nice clean clothing on a regular basis. Items such as canned food, personal hygiene items, books and clothing are available for each veteran on an as-need basis. Most of our homeless veterans live in nearby wooded area, so items to help with outdoor living are also provided. On-site haircuts are provided monthly.
Outreach workers from the local VA and Volunteers of America visit the laundry to make sure our veterans are aware of all that both organizations have to offer them. These organizations work to place our homeless veterans in housing by providing housing vouchers through the HUD-VASH Program. Once a veteran receives housing, the Project Suds America team goes to work, completely furnishing their apartment with furniture, household items, linens and any other necessities they may need to make the transition from living outdoors. Recently, Project Suds America has been “gifted” a 15 passenger van that will enable us to transport several veterans at a time for appointments, shopping and errands. This gift will enable us to drastically increase our services to our veterans.
Project Suds America, Inc. is an IRS determined 501(c)(3) organization. We operate on direct donations from individuals. Our volunteers keep very busy planning local fundraisers to keep our organization alive and thriving. We have NO PAID EMPLOYEES. All services are provided by a wonderful group of volunteers. We currently have two storage units that house donations of furniture and household items to use for veterans transitioning into housing. On a regular basis, we accept donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, toothpaste, soap), paper products, medical supplies, canned foods, and clothing. These items are distributed on a weekly basis, as needed.
